The Occupational English Test is a kind of English language proficiency test that is specially designed for healthcare professionals who would like to work around the world. This is a testing tool for English language usage in a professional setup. English is an official language spoken widely across the world. It is therefore mandatory that every individual, who would like to work as a Health Care professional, must have a working knowledge of the English language and should be able to converse in the English language

OET is quite similar to IELTS and works on the same lines when it comes to testing the proficiency of a Health Care specialist. It also focuses on testing the knowledge of an individual as regards their listening, writing reading, and speaking skills. The test is based on a grading system where an individual is awarded an 'A' grade as per their performance in the exam. Some institutes may have different standards as far as the grading is concerned. Therefore, it varies from one country to the other. For example in the UK, a doctor may be required to score a 'B' grade in the OTE with a 'B' in every paper as well. Similarly, for a nurse, the requirement may be slightly different. While she may be required to obtain a 'B' grade overall in the OTE exam, in the individual skills to the requirement is that of a B grade. While an IELTS score may consist of 7.0 marks with a minimum of 7.0 in Listening, Reading, and Speaking but a 6.5 score in Writing is acceptable.

  • In actual practice, the scores that are required in the OTE test for the profession of a nurse are on similar levels as measured by the common European standards, especially for the advanced level.
